We commonly get asked which kit a customer should purchase for their bike and the answer really depends on their bike and what they hope to gain from the kit.

First some background : Why Flashtune and not a piggy back fueling device.

Most customers will, once they have removed their catalytic converter, flash the bike to de-restrict it from the emissions based restrictions and issues a bike comes with from the factory (because they have had to meet emissions restrictions)

In the old days it was a case of putting on a Dynojet PowerCommander (or other piggy back fueling device) and adjusting the fueling, these days it’s not just fueling that is the issue when you change the exhaust pipe there are so many gains to be had from FlashTuning your bike that ECU tuning with a product such as FTecu FlashTune is the only way to not only fuel the bike but at same time remove those horrible emissions based restrictions built into the bikes electronics.

For insrance a common issue customers of new bikes experience is a “snatchy throttle” or a on/off/on throttle feeling that “feels like a lightswitch”, well that is because manufacturers are forced to put catalytic conveters on the bikes and have to power off the injections on closed throttle positions to ensure there is no fuel passing into the exhaust on deceleration that will then potentially melt the catalytic converter. Once the catayltic converter is removed we can disable the injectors being powered off and smooth that throttle right out.

So which kit shall I buy ?

Bike side kit

The Bike side kits all have a FTDL code as part of their product SKU in the listing. (all SKU’s currently look like this xP_FTDL_yy where “x” denotes the USB Datalink type (either 4P four pin or 6P 6 Pin) and the “y” relates to the specific number of the harness which in turn relates to the motorcycle model you are going to flash.

With the bike side kit you get a FTecu USB Datalink cable and a single licence to flashtune your bike as many times as you like. You also have included a bike side harness which (once your USB is registered) you have access to the installation guide Document Centre on the FTecu website.

I always say you are better going for the bike side kit (FTDL) as once fitted you do not need to get to the ECU let alone unplug it if you need to make any changes.

A bike side harness is also almost a prerequisite requirement if you are going to tune your bike with ActiveTune, but more about that later.

Bench Kits

The FTecu Bench kits are typically used by customers and dealers wanting to flash many ECU’s without the albeit small expense of buying replacement bike side harnesses for each bike.

All Bench kits have a BNKT code as part of their product SKU in the listing. (all SKU’s currently look like this xP_BNKT_yy where “x” denotes the USB Datalink type (either 4P four pin or 6P 6 Pin) and the “y” relates to the specific number of the harness which in turn relates to the motorcycle model you are going to flash.

With the bench kit you get a FTecu USB Datalink cable and a single licence to flashtune your bike as many times as you like. You also have included a  specific bench adapter and a power supply unit (US or International) which is required to power the ECU whilst FlashTuning, as obviously the ECU will be off the bike and therefore the bikes loom cannot power the ECU.

Whilst you can bench flashtune an ECU to enable ActiveTune it is best to have a bike side cable to make adjustments and apply changes later.

It’s important to note that the USB cables in a bike and bench kit are the same and you can purchase replacement bike or bench harnesses if needed, also you can purchase additional ECU licences to flash additional bikes.

ActiveTune

ActiveTune is the most advanced autotune type product on the market. The kit consists of a Bosch wideband Lambda sensors, an ActiveTune controller and an activation code for ActiveTune.

In order to use ActiveTune the ECU must be flashed in order to enable the ActiveTune module and for our software to be inserted into the ECU. Therefore either a Bike side or Bench kit is required.

From the software you can modify our preset AFR (Air / Fuel Ratio) target maps and the bike will then use the included wideband Lambda included in the kit and all the sensors on the bike (Coolant temp, rpm, throttle position, intake pressure, manifold, combustion, wheel speed) to trim the Throttle v rpm and Fuel map v rpm whilst you ride to acheive the AFR Target map that has been set.

So as climate, altitude and even fuel quality used changes the bike is kept running at the optimum AFR, it’s very clever and works very well indeed.

Why is the bike side kit then desirable, if the bike will tune itself ?

As a safety precaution the trims that we allow the software to tune the bike are limited to + or – 10% this is incase there is a fault with the lambda or another sensor on the bike that gives false information to our software and the bike could tune itself too lean to the point of destriction, however when you first install ActiveTune (and dependant on the modifications you have made to your bike) the required trims may well be more than the + or – 10% limits, so you may need to run the bike 2 or 3 times through the rpm and throttle position and apply the trims after each of these runs until the bike has a good base map to then ActiveTune from, it’s a simple process and we have a youtube video that takes you through the process (also linked in the image on the right).

You can purchase ActiveTune on it’s own (but you will need to already own a bike side or bench kit)  or we sell it in two bundles.

ActiveTune isn’t available for all bikes that FTecu FlashTune cover, as older bikes do have limitations to the space on the ECU for us to store our software and also some do not have all the required sensors for us to implement a sound working solution.
